After my prep session with Maria I felt a lot better. I felt ready to go out on the track, and have fun racing my dirt bike. All the other women racers and I line up on the starting line. I chose the inside, which proved to be a mistake. I got boxed in and can to an abrupt stop even before making the first turn! I got around the pile up, but I was a ways back and had a long way to start playing catch up! I started picking off girl by girl, along with battling the fierce, intimidating track. I rode smart, but In the end I finished 18th. I still had more to give, and was disappointed in myself for being so cautious. I also learned I need to work on my starts a lot more than I have been.
Second moto came around. I chose to start from a gate more on the outside this time, to prevent getting shoved inside and not being able to move. It was a little better, but I had to go out of the way to get back on track; but I missed the pile up jam! I was feeling really good, and confident. I started rising, passing girls as we went up the hill, then we went into an off camber, and there was another pileup! This time, there was no getting around it; I fell. Immediately after, I grabbed the clutch to save my bike from dying. Just as I got grasp on my bike, some girl ran into my rear end and caused me to tip over again! I ended up saving my engine from killing, but it cut me down a couple extra seconds. In the end of all the mess, I get back up and continued racing. I get down to the bottom of the hill and start panicking because my bike is not stopping as quickly as it should! It took a couple more horrible corners for me to realize my rear brake was broke! I ran the entire 15 min + 2 lap moto without a rear brake. I don’t know how I did it, but I did, without falling or flying off the track. I ended up finishing the second moto in 22nd; which showed me that I was indeed riding too cautious first moto and I need to step it up a lot more than I was.
I’m back at home now, well I’m in the office in Illinois right now. I’m going home Thursday night and I’m going to be racing on the east side of the state (Michigan) at a track called Baja Acres. It is an awesome sand track, very long, 2.5 miles. It gets very choppy and there become a lot of braking bumps into the corners; which will help me prepare for these up and coming races. I am going to continue working on my cardio and strength training routines, and I am also going to work on my starts!
It’s a series, I may have gotten 20th at this race, but there are many others, and I need to be at all of them in order to show my consistency and my full ability. I am excited to go to Freestone; I have not been there since they turned it into a National so it should be a lot of fun! I’m really excited for this weekend to race in Michigan too.
Hope you enjoy. Take care and stay safe!
Lindsey
